Insurance Firms Urged to Back Highway Safety Plan
AP report from Austin details a day-long hearing on car insurance rate hikes. State actuaries propose an average 5.9 percent statewide rise across all car insurance, with a 10.6 percent jump in liability. Rates vary by area and driver class. Governor Connally’s highway safety program is urged as a path to lower rates, including stricter traffic laws and driver education. Young male drivers face the steepest increases, while seniors see smaller rises. The State Insurance Board will decide on changes before August 1, as requests for penalties on bad driving and graduated young-driver rates surface.
