Texas school tax base declines hit rural districts hard
Two thirds of Texas school districts reported a loss in property tax base from 1984 to 1985 as economic problems in agriculture and oil reverberate through local revenues. The Value study put total taxable district value at 702.6 billion in 1985, a 1.6 percent rise over 1984, while overall market value was 830.9 billion after exemptions. Rural districts bore the sharpest cuts, with urban/suburban districts around Dallas Fort Worth Austin and San Antonio showing growth, and the outcome may force 1986 tax rate increases to maintain revenue.

Lakewood drainage projects added to priority list
Baytown City Council unanimously amended the 1986 drainage improvement priority list to include two Lakewood projects after receiving a petition signed by 236 homeowners. The plan calls for a Pin Oak line from Willow to Rollingwood and larger piping on Rollingwood Circle at an estimated $28,500, plus a line from Post Oak north to the Flood Control District ditch at $35,000.

Murder charges filed in Baytown shooting death
Antonio Flores, 30, faces a murder charge in the death of Jose Martinez, 55, in Baytown. Police say a 10:45 p.m. shooting at 1222 Magnolia left Martinez dead and left his son Sergio injured. Flores was hospitalized and later jailed with a $10,000 bond.

Oak tree becomes Baytown’s official city symbol
The Baytown City Council unanimously approved a proposal to name the old oak on Texas Avenue the city’s official symbol. Estimated at 200 to 240 years old, the tree had long served as an informal emblem and has endured disease car wrecks termites and prior removals. A historic tablet was placed at the tree by the Goose Creek Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
