W C Dunahee long time employee of the Baytown refinery was found dead in his home at 313 Bolster Friday morning. Neighbors reported he had not been seen since Thursday. Justice of the Peace Roscoe Bierlein ruled a heart attack caused the death. Dunahee’s wife is visiting relatives in East Texas and was notified. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Paul U Zee Funeral Home upon her return.
President Truman urged the federal government to back a strong compulsory civil rights program. He said policing civil rights should not be left to states alone and called for a 1948 program including FEPC lynching and poll tax laws. He spoke at Howard University’s commencement before 691 graduates.
KOSE ISLAND Korea June 13 1 Brig Gen Haydon Boatner said victory came Friday in the bloody little war to regain control of the island with 80 000 communist prisoners. American troops stormed compounds 76 66 and 62 where heavy fighting and many deaths occurred as prisoners were moved to new enclosures.
Copenhagen dispatches report King Frederick II, aged 53, came back from a school swimming session in a cheerful mood. He joked about a past incident with a pool attendant and his family, saying he had long desired to pass the attendant into the pool.
Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower said he would replace top State Department personnel if he wins the Republican nomination and the presidency. Speaking at a picnic with Pennsylvania delegates near Gettysburg, he claimed current top officials are from the opposing party and urged a new administration. Governor John S. Fine led the delegation and noted the rare gathering with the leading candidates, Eisenhower and Taft, while remaining noncommittal on his own choice.
Ensign Charles Gene Lewis, 22, based at Roswell, survived 51 hours in shark filled waters after bailing from a fuel-depleted plane near Mexico. He was rescued by a tanker and taken to Houston. Lewis spoke of prayer and hope during the ordeal, while companion Ensign Thomas Bowen was picked up by a Spanish ship Aldecoa.
Harris County Mayors and Councilmen study a county wide sanitation district to curb stream and bay pollution. City Manager Darwin Middleton says a meeting of county and water district officials will discuss the proposal, which could require amending the state constitution. A trunk sewer line along the Houston ship channel is a possibility to transport sewage to a disposal plant near Morgans Point.
Tom C Gooch, 72, publisher of the Dallas Times-Herald, and chairman of KRLD radio and TV, died at his Dallas home at 6:25 a.m. after eight weeks of illness. He joined the Times-Herald as a cartoonist and rose to editor in chief, later holding the general manager and executive roles. He served as a trustee of the Southwestern Medical Foundation, VP of the State Fair of Texas, and was a 32nd degree Mason. Born in Bonham, Texas, his father Harold Gooch hunted buffalo near Abilene.
Paul Neukom, 30, said his romance with Pegey Perry, 18, began with love at first sound after hearing her voice. The couple, both blind, plan to marry on June 24.
Baytown city council granted a $20 a month raise to police and firemen, raising minimums to $280 and $270 respectively. Public works staff received hourly boosts from 30 to 15 cents, with water and street foremen getting $25 monthly increases to $373 and the garbage foreman $30 more to $250. department heads and admin officers excluded from the raise.
AUSTIN June 13 Polio cases topped state records in the latest weekly tally. Health official George W. Cox reported 33 cases for the week ending June 1, raising the fatal year total to 668 and surpassing 1950’s peak. Harris County led with 24 cases, followed by Bexar with additional reports.
East Harris County announces fogging as part of a campaign against insects and potential polio spread. Bill Lomax says Crosby area will be fogged today and other areas will be reached soon with a county fogging and spraying machine obtained from a private individual, to be manned by precinct workers under health department direction. The health official asks East Harris communities to share any needs or concerns.
Baytown officials approved installing 150 feet of 2 1/2 inch drainage pipe along Seventh Street side of St John’s Methodist Church after a back tax debt tied to West Main property was paid. The debt arose from five lots purchased in 1950. a waiver had been informally promised but later barred by the city charter. The council also authorized $800 in work to aid the church, with John Fulton noting the drainage tiles would ease encroachment on church property.
