Adventists Train to Serve Without Bearing Arms
Seventh day Adventists in Grand Ledge undertake a two week boot camp to align with Army medical basic training while avoiding armed service. About 223 men, paying 35 dollars each, endure 5:30 am to 9:30 pm drills under ex-Marine instructor Titus Henderson. The group supports service to the government but seeks to avoid life-taking actions, citing history of court martial and hard labor for refusals. The camp, named Camp Desmond T. Doss, reflects the faith’s stance amid ongoing Vietnam deployments with several Adventists serving and at least three killed.
