Queen to Approve Royal Passwords for Three Months

London June 7. The Queen this week will approve a password for the royal palaces and forts for the next three months. The Word is a safeguard against malicious orders to royal guards. The practice began after the Restoration and continues after 292 years. A war office list of 90 unused passwords is presented to the Queen for selection. The sovereign approves one and shares it with the war office commander and London’s Lord Mayor. Benjamin Franklin helped popularize chess in the United States.
