Bears on Kodiak Island Thrive Amid Human Visitors
On Kodiak Island Alaska bears of the Ursus arctos middendorffi subspecies thrive within the 1.8 million acre Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge. Biologists say 2,000 to 2,500 bears reside in the refuge with about 500 more outside. Hunting continues with roughly 190 bears shot annually under licensed guides as managers push visitor education and potential use restrictions to protect both bears and people.
