AUSTIN AP Texas July quota is 54 men for the Army, state Director Morris Schwartz said. The national quota is 29,000, all for the Army. Local draft boards will forward 5,016 men for pre induction examinations in July, up from 4,000 in June. Month draft quotas this year have ranged between 1,110 and 874.
Honor student SIM BR'IAN son of Mr and Mrs Yohn BD Bryan of 266 s Burnet appears on Rice University's spring semester president's honor roll. City salary study panel plans a progressive pay scale for firemen and faces police opposition. The plan, supported by fire department members, aims to hire 16 to 33 more firemen and rework the department, while police oppose raises from 4 to 159 a month. In a chaotic afternoon in the Mediterranean U S Navy ship USS Liberty was attacked by Israeli torpedo boats and airplanes about 15 miles north of the Sinai Peninsula. Initial reports listed four Americans dead and 33 wounded. The Pentagon said Israel informed the United States the attack was in error and Tel Aviv apologized. Egyptian forces resisted Israeli troops in western Sinai as a cease-fire edged Jordanian fronts but continued fighting in other areas. Israel announced gains around Hebron and the Dead Sea while Dayan cautioned against assuming goals at the Suez Canal. The U N Security Council urged a cease-fire by 4 p m EDT Wednesday, with Egypt declaring it would fight on. The Arab coalition rejected the cease-fire, and reports from El Arish and Suez indicated ongoing combat as forces regrouped.
Congressman Bob Eckhardt of Houston will headline the Baytown Chamber of Commerce noon gathering at the Holiday Inn. He will tour local industrial sites and meet Baytown officials, then return for talks with the Fresh Water Recreation and Reclamation Board on projects to protect bays, create a recreation facility, and secure federal support.

A 42 year old Las Vegas man was injured Wednesday night when his car crashed into a utility pole near the intersection of South Pruett and Daniel. Lamar Simpson was treated for head lacerations and released from San Jacinto Methodist Hospital. Panelman Zach Booth said Simpson was traveling south on South Pruett about 10 PM when his car failed to make a curve near Daniel Street. Simpson is visiting Baytown relatives.
