Rail Workers Wage Hike Proposal Made
A presidential emergency board urged a five cent hourly wage increase for 650,000 railroad workers who threaten strikes across most railroads. The increase would start July 1 and replace a further general raise with improved health and welfare benefits. The 65,000 nonoperating workers would benefit, while the board advised shifts in vacation and holiday pay rules to ease hardship. The proposal is nonbinding and follows Railway Labor Act procedures.
