Defenders use count signals in suit contracts to defeat four spades
In a four spades contract the defense can force the declarer to fail by signaling count. West leads a club two from an odd number of clubs to show a doubleton, East ducks to win, and the defense then blocks the declarer’s access to club winners. The defender with the ace must time hold ups to communicate length, enabling the partner to hold up a key card and kill the contract.
