A slow moving storm system will continue dropping precipitation across the Northeast for 24 hours through today. Expect a few showers and thunderstorms to develop in the Ohio Valley and Plains as the system slides up the coast.
February actions by HUD official Dan Rodriguez Jr. set a debarment aim for Eiland and imposed deadlines through July 15 to implement corrective steps. The OIG report urged sanctions for altering books and records and urged the local HUD office to tighten BHA oversight and control over Authority operations.
On May 12 Rodriguez warned Baytown Housing Authority President Wallace that the board had not met OIG corrective deadlines and he urged replacing the entire board. Wallace replied defending Johnson’s legal role and saying most corrective actions were taken while disputing several audit findings. He noted ongoing procurement, transfers, and a June 1 performance review that preceded Eiland’s resignation.
Baytown housing authority leaders advance a plan to buy the Decker Drive San Jacinto Hospital site for 2.25 million with a goal to convert it into an affordable independent retirement center. They may assign ownership to a non profit and use Exxon Mobil’s Archia Courts site interests to redevelop housing, with HUD Section 8 vouchers under consideration.
Rodriguez plans to meet new Mayor DonCarlos to discuss Baytown Housing Authority while Wallace, who has a Thursday meeting with DonCarlos, says no resignations. Both insist they want the authority turned around without taking over and aim to expand services per contract.
Police report a con artist duo targeted a Garth Road shopper at 11 30 a m Friday seeking to launder 20000 from a deceased mother. A 4000 withdrawal was stolen as the bag proved empty. Separately another resident reported car tires and wheels stolen from a Maple Drive vehicle. Baytown Police logged 170 calls from Friday to Saturday including seven alarms and multiple thefts and accidents.
