Baytown voters re elected Mayor Pete Alfaro by 53 votes after two counts finishing 2,833 for Alfaro and 2,780 for rival Charles Shaffer. The race reversed a May 4 result where Shaffer led by 39 votes. Some early ballots were counted twice, so all ballots were reviewed.
Alfaro defeated Shaffer by 53 votes after a tabulation error led to a recount. Initial tallies showed Shaffer ahead by five with 3,187 to 3,182 before the correction lowered the total to 5,694 votes, with six precincts counted twice. Judge Judi Craig said a full recount is still needed as Alfaro, with nine years as mayor, remains the longest-serving consecutive Baytown mayor since 1948.
