Local WWII pilot to be honored in France
Second Lt. Jerome James Zierlein a Goose Creek resident and 1938 Robe rt E. Lee High School graduate was killed in action August 25 1944 north of Paris during a ferocious Luftwaffe air battle. He and 22 fellow pilots from the 474th Fighter Group were en route from a temporary airbase near Omaha Beach to attack three Nazi airfields around Laon France near Beauvais.

Zierlein family honored for World War II heroism in France
1938 REL grad Lt Zierlein died in a dogfight as American pilots faced greater German air power. Four pilots were killed, two captured, five escaped. The crash site was authenticated by historians. A monument will be dedicated in Cramois at a ceremony hosted by Mayor Jean-Michel Carsonville and French historian Alain Bodel, with extended Zierlein relatives from Austin in attendance.

Baytown artist opens Painting With a Twist studio
Pam Burnett nurtured a lifelong creative streak from painting lions at eight to decorating clothes in high school. After a 30 year JPMorgan Chase career she started Painting With a Twist at 407 W. Baker Rd Suite S, Baytown, now approaching its first anniversary in July. Burnett sells painted wine glasses at charity auctions and previously sold custom jeans and high heel art to boutiques. Her work includes rhinestone adorned pieces and a variety of painted items, reflecting a diverse artistic journey. See page 5A for more.

Cancer Survivor Day keynote honors Anne Prokosch at hospital
Anne Prokosch, 71, cancer survivor and former Lee College math teacher, delivered the National Cancer Survivors Day keynote at Houston Methodist San Jacinto Hospital. She spoke of overcoming kidney cancer in 2002 and breast cancer in 2004, stressing post traumatic growth and moving forward. The event included a lavender ribbon, a gift, and remarks by hospital leaders and clinicians.

Forecast Teases Quiet Atlantic Hurricane Season 2014
Colorado State University forecasters Philip Klotzbach and William Gray predict a calm Atlantic season with nine tropical storms and three hurricanes.
