The sixth annual Bayou Bowl will pit eighty high school all-stars from Texas and Louisiana in a big game on Saturday at 8 p.m. The report notes page 5A for further coverage.
Baytown Public Works and Teamwork Construction will repair pavement in the 2400 block of Garth Road causing southbound lanes from Highway 146 to Schilling Avenue to close starting Tuesday. After repair, northbound lanes will close for improvements and work should finish by June 10. Skate Park opening follows with a 5 30 p.m. ceremony at Unidad Park 2510 J B Le Fevre Road and daily hours through 10 p.m. first 100 attendees receive shirts. Obituary notices honor eight individuals including Michael Lawrence Rice Fannie Lou Harbaugh Florine Barber Cooke and others. The brief list records passing with local acknowledgment from the community and family tributes.
Eight year old Ty Pearce of Huffman walked with a walker onto the tee box at Goose Creek Country Club during Bayou Bowl events. Doctors told him in 2003 he would not walk again due to Cerebral Palsy but Shriners Children’s Hospitals provided free care including a soft tissue release on his foot and hamstring. Pearce’s mother Lynn MacDonald said Shriners transformed his life and character, bringing hope and improved mobility.
The Robert E. Lee High School class of 2008, 440 seniors, marched to receive diplomas at Stallworth Stadium as maroon and white colors dominated the scene. Valedictorian Rebecca Cutting spoke of long anticipation for graduation while the Lee High Band played Pomp and Circumstance No. 1 under a sunset sky.
Roy Hoskins a Baytown native 44 who has muscular dystrophy and a heart transplant built a hand carved oak pulpit in Wooster Baptist Church. He says he uses his hands for His glory and the pulpit will be dedicated today as Father Mack Jones praises his faith and work.
Twenty five years after Hurricane Alicia struck Aug 18 1983 Baytown reflects on its devastation. The Category 3 storm killed over 21 people caused $2.4 billion in damage and toppled homes and facilities across Harris County including Brownwood subdivision and school structures. Fire Marshal Bernard Olive recalls the nightmarish sights.
