The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the May unemployment rate steady at five percent with nonagricultural payrolls up modestly by 150000, while overall joblessness remains near the 4.4 million discouraged figure. White collar and minority rates show small shifts.
A group of 18 Crosby Baytown and Houston area property owners filed a suit in Harris County District Court against Waste Products Inc and its Sanaray of Houston parent. They allege the firm’s permit requests for a garbage and chemical dump near Crosby have depressed property values across about 944 acres and cite applications to Harris County and the Texas Water Quality Board from 1971 to 1972.
Coastal Gas Producing Co. cuts gas to about 40 industries along a pipeline from Fort Stockton to Louisiana and near Austin to the Mexican border causing rationing. The company faces SEC scrutiny over report accuracy as a recent well decline tightens supplies for power and petrochemical use.

Parks and Recreation Board will ask the city council on June 14 to begin Phase II of the 1970 bond program for parks. Baytown Service League calls for community donations to fund annual Charity Ball supporting local programs. Members contributed over 3,000 hours this year assisting TB testing eye and ear screenings puppet shows Golden Age Club transportation for St. James House residents and fifth grade trips to the Houston Symphony. Goose Creek Country Club hosts the November 3 event under Mrs Tilman O'Brien Jr and cochair Mrs Rick Peebles with Mrs Rod Grandy as sponsor chair and Mrs Leon Brown as president. The group has 25 years of local service.
