Election Code Changes Highlight Texas Legislature Actions
The 57th Texas Legislature blocked future repeats of the 7 candidate April 4 Senate free-for-all and approved six other Election Code changes. A 31,000 filing fee for statewide elections was approved to be paid to the secretary of state in special elections and by the party executive committees in primaries. The bill HB350 awaits Gov. Price Daniel's signature. Other measures include revised poll lists, use of voting machines in Houston and El Paso elections, and a run-off provision for school board elections. The session left several election reform bills undecided amid a Democratic-dominated legislature and Republican responses.
