Swimming classes sponsored by the summer recreation program will begin with 8:30 a.m. Friday registration at Rose land Park pool. Twenty candidates filed by 6 p.m. Tuesday for Harris County Fresh Water District No. 4 positions as supervisors in a June 11 election to decide if the district on Jones Road southeast of Highlands will split into east McNair and west white-majority sections. The vote, at District No. 1 water office, follows a dispute over district improvements. West-side candidates include Cal vint L. Tiner Jr, T. B. Stone, H. L. Griffin, H. A. Treadway, I. Overand, W. W. Riley, W. M. Brett, H. Lumpkin, George F. E. Keith Jr, and C. G. N. Adams Overand, Stone and Griffin currently serve on the board with M. Gardner as chairman and H. W. Oliver as secretary, who are not seeking reelection. East-side candidates in McNair are J. B. Baker, Alton Godfrey, Scott Mills, J. F. Felton, Neil Bryant, George Daniel, L. J. Patton, A. O. Kelly, Jerry Finchback, and Taft Byrdwell. Five supervisors will be elected from each section.
The district revised the current year budget noting receipts exceed $3 million as actual tax collections reach 97 percent. Total anticipated receipts rise to $3,080,915.28 with expenditures of $3,080,437.20. College and district budgets show receipts of $397,860.44 and expenditures of $397,445.75. Both balances are expected by year end.
City undertakes summer street maintenance on Busch Terrace with shell and asphalt surfacing. Rain delays since April 1 disrupt progress, but City Manager C. D. Middleton expects steady gains in good weather. The program, funded by taxes and parking meter fees, prioritizes stone coating later in the season.
President Eisenhower ruled out any 1956 ticket including William F. Knowland as running mate. He indicated he would not pair with Knowland, at least as of Wednesday, while signaling ongoing discussions with Republican leaders about a vice presidential nominee. Eisenhower noted he did not realize a No. 2 choice would guide the convention and recalled drafting a note listing several younger men for consideration.
The Deep Park School District bought 24 acres south of Spencer Highway at Center Street for 28,800 dollars, paying H L Roper. Ernest Knipp announced the deed will be recorded next week. Roper retains a 132 nonparticipating royalty and may use the land rent-free for one year. No construction plans announced.
Baytown enjoyed clear skies and warm highs near 85 amid unsettled nationwide conditions. Tuesday night cooled to comfortable levels while morning readings remained sunny and calm despite winter storms elsewhere.
An armed robbery charge against N. E. Whitaker was dismissed on Wednesday and an attachment issued for the complainant O. T. Roberts of Bay town Woods. Justice Walter Queen had continued the case after Roberts failed to appear to testify. Roberts signed a statement claiming Whitaker took $5 at gunpoint in broad daylight at a garage on West Main, and police found a .38 caliber pistol in the man’s car when Roberts identified him.
Sue Gartman an 11 year old with a heart ailment has left the hospital and is now at 200 North Seventh. She may have visitors only from 9 to 4 daily and will remain in bed for several months as her parents stated. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs C M Gartman of 300 North Seventh.
Four American pilots released from Red China after two years arrive in Honolulu with families awaiting at Hickam. The group flew in the Bataan transport, MacArthur era aircraft, as Maj. Gen. Lory Smith canceled an East Asia trip to greet them. Relatives travel from Philadelphia and Omaha to meet the fliers, who receive released pay totaling about 27 000 dollars and will undergo medical checks before settling at base housing.
W T Busch chair of the Baytown Chamber highway committee said he would present the Houston to Baytown super freeway plan to Harris County officials as the next step. He and committee members met a subcommittee on freeways and expressways and outlined rerouting Highway 90 through the Baytown La Porte tunnel to merge with the Super freeway. The plan envisions a direct route from near Houston to Baytown linking Baytown with U S Highway 90.
Dr. H. H. Uhlig, MIT metallurgy professor and corrosion authority, will repeat a fall corrosion course in Humble. The program lists engineering division participants and notes his MIT start in corrosion research, editor roles, and the 1951 Willig R. Whitney Award recognition.
City water project nears finish as pipe work is complete except for a crossing under the Southern Pacific tracks. City Manager C Darwin Middleton says railroad consent to cross the tracks should come any day. Residents with taps ready await permission to connect once the pipe is installed.
A Cedar Bayou residents survey shows potential savings if Harris County Water Control and Improvement District No. 36 joins the City of Baytown. Reported by Boyd M. Hill and Henry Singleton, the study notes lower fire insurance, water and sewer rates, and cheaper phone bills, with an average yearly tax increase offset by these savings. The district serves about two square miles and 250 consumers near Baytown’s present northeast edge.
The USDA said a citrus pest, the citrus black fly, has invaded Texas. Expert N O Barry reported spotting the pest on a tree near a Brownsville tourist court, likely carried across the Rio Grande by car. The fly is small but costly to the citrus industry and has not been found in Texas before.
Baytown schools operated a fleet of 16 buses and 2 pickup trucks on Wednesday to transport groups. One bus shuttled Gander baseball players to Austin while the REL band went to the game. Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and day camp participants were moved to Camp Strake and related sites.
