Sinking of USS Indianapolis marked 70th anniversary
The USS Indianapolis disaster of July 1945 remains a stark WWII memory. 300 sailors died, about 900 survived the shark-infested Philippine Sea ordeal before rescue five days later. The ship carried atomic bomb components to be used on Hiroshima, amid later controversy over Captain McVay's conduct and a campaign led by Hunter Scott that led to McVay's exoneration.
