The tropical storm Barbara is not expected to bring significant rain to Texas as it remains a tight Gulf disturbance unlikely to broaden its rain area. Weather observers say little chance of widespread rainfall unless its course veers westward, with any precipitation limited to the storm’s current blowout over the Southwest Louisiana region.

Sheriff nominee Wylie H. Barnes was shot in the stomach by Mrs. Leon Henderson, 36, who then wrecked her car on a concrete bridge. Barnes wrested the pistol, escaped into his home, and was hospitalized in critical condition as investigators treated Henderson after a separate automobile crash.
County Clerk W D Miller reminded voters that absentee ballots for the August 28 Democratic runoff start August 9 and are available only at the county clerk’s office in Houston. Ballots can be requested by mail or in person. Voting ends August 2 and August 23 is the deadline to transfer a poll tax receipt to a new precinct at Baytown branch tax office.
Sixteen billion gallons of water from Lake Lavon near Dallas will be sent down the Trinity River to Gulf Coast rice growers in Chambers County to save a $10 million Gulf Coast rice crop. The sale, for $50 000, aims to aid Baytown area farms suffering in a heat wave, though officials warn only about 40 percent may reach the destination, with 60 percent evaporating during the 400 mile trip. Dallas will receive half of the water starting in 1966 as NTMWD controls the supply.
Mrs Glenn Hill, under treatment in Jefferson Day, remains in critical condition though described as somewhat better on Thursday. Her 18 month old son Glenn Preston is staying with maternal grandparents and not at the hospital while receiving therapy for weakened leg muscles. The baby’s illness was withheld from Mrs Hill and her husband asks that no cards or letters mention it to avoid shock. The family notes she was placed in an iron lung Monday but may be briefly removed for periods.
The La Porte-Mayshore Emergency Corps opens its annual fund drive with a Main Street display of rescue gear. Organizers seek money to operate next year and to buy an ore board motor and light trailer. The volunteer group, formed in 1950, has 15 active members and about 300 hours of work logged last year. They have $4,000 in equipment, funded by donations, and have led first aid training in La Porte. Captain Jimmy Donuts chairs the drive, with donations sent to him c/o La Porte Bayshore Emergency Corps.
In Cleveland on Thursday nurse Susan Hayes recounted intimate relations with Dr. Samuel Sheppard and a California visit, claiming a week in which they shared a bedroom. Officials considered arresting Sheppard via Bay Village police as the nurse described gifts exchanged and letters they had.

Funeral services for Sam Armata 64 will be at 9 30 a m Friday at St Josephs Catholic Church with Rev Denis Kennedy officiating. Burial in Rest Cemetery under Paul A Lee Funeral Home direction. A rosary is set for 3 p m Thursday at the funeral home. Armata, a Chemical Construction Corp employee, died after a heart attack Wednesday morning. Justice of the Peace Roscoe Zierlein ruled death natural due to heart attack. He came to Baytown in 1920 and belonged to Woodmen of the World Camp 1922 and Labor Union 313. World War II veteran. He leaves three sisters Rosa Lee Regusa of Houston Anna Slagle and T W Gunn of Baytown and two brothers Joe and John Armata of Baytown. Pallbearers: Douglas Gunn Gene Gunn Arthur Johnston Louis Leonetti Mike Rose John Regusa. Honorary pallbearers: WOW Camp 1922 members and Labor Union.

At M D Anderson hospital in Houston on Thursday a chrome pistol that shoots radioactive gold pellets into cancer tumors was unveiled. Dr. Gilbert Fletcher explained the device designed by Dr. Warren Sinclair speeds treatment with a repeater action allowing up to 15 pellets placed one centimeter apart.
Walter Scott Smith Jr., 12, was rushed to Baytown Hospital in a wrecker after his bike collided with a panel truck at West Lobit and Commerce on a late Wednesday. Ronald John Datgie, 1144 East Jack, was driving the panel truck. the wrecker driver DV Ott reported the incident. the boy suffered a head laceration.
