Sheriff Barns Shot By Woman In Denton Texas

Sheriff nominee Wylie H. Barnes was shot in the stomach by Mrs. Leon Henderson, 36, who then wrecked her car on a concrete bridge. Barnes wrested the pistol, escaped into his home, and was hospitalized in critical condition as investigators treated Henderson after a separate automobile crash.

Absentee Voting Set In Democratic Runoff In Houston

County Clerk W D Miller reminded voters that absentee ballots for the August 28 Democratic runoff start August 9 and are available only at the county clerk’s office in Houston. Ballots can be requested by mail or in person. Voting ends August 2 and August 23 is the deadline to transfer a poll tax receipt to a new precinct at Baytown branch tax office.

Can It Save Rice Crop Water Deal Heads for Fields

Sixteen billion gallons of water from Lake Lavon near Dallas will be sent down the Trinity River to Gulf Coast rice growers in Chambers County to save a $10 million Gulf Coast rice crop. The sale, for $50 000, aims to aid Baytown area farms suffering in a heat wave, though officials warn only about 40 percent may reach the destination, with 60 percent evaporating during the 400 mile trip. Dallas will receive half of the water starting in 1966 as NTMWD controls the supply.

Mrs Glenn Hill Remains Critically Ill in Hospital

Mrs Glenn Hill, under treatment in Jefferson Day, remains in critical condition though described as somewhat better on Thursday. Her 18 month old son Glenn Preston is staying with maternal grandparents and not at the hospital while receiving therapy for weakened leg muscles. The baby’s illness was withheld from Mrs Hill and her husband asks that no cards or letters mention it to avoid shock. The family notes she was placed in an iron lung Monday but may be briefly removed for periods.

Emergency Corps Starts Funds Drive

The La Porte-Mayshore Emergency Corps opens its annual fund drive with a Main Street display of rescue gear. Organizers seek money to operate next year and to buy an ore board motor and light trailer. The volunteer group, formed in 1950, has 15 active members and about 300 hours of work logged last year. They have $4,000 in equipment, funded by donations, and have led first aid training in La Porte.
