Record-holders Chance Nelson and Thomas Bates headline the Baytown Track Club entering Saturday’s TAAF State meet in San Antonio. Also notes on local crime reports and weather.
Rev Gregory Griffin urged Baytown City Council to adopt an ordinance prohibiting pants worn low to display underwear. He argued clothing shapes behavior while opponents, including teens and Black youth, criticized the move as restricting fashion freedom. Griffin cited business concerns about image and employability.
Baytown's new Circulator bus system aims to ease mobility amid high gas costs and unemployment. Free rides run through Friday, Aug. 8, after which trips cost about $1 with discounts for kids, seniors, and the disabled. Routes connect San Jacinto Mall, Lee College, Baytown City Hall, and Park Street with transfers at Park Street and Garth Road.
Homann Tire Co moved into Baytown 18 months ago creating jobs and traffic. The 19,500 square foot building now sits unmarked after being acquired by American Tire Distributors. Most local workers were offered positions at the new firm, and the site became an American Tire Distribution center on YMCA Drive.
Gary McPherson and his wife Lisa Lauraine McPherson, both from Highlands, died Sunday in a motorcycle wreck on an Interstate 20 access road in Abilene while they were visiting their son Russell, 17, who competed in the Texas State 4-H Horse Show. The family learned of the tragedy after authorities found the bodies.
