Cedar Bayou Ferries Shaped East Harris Transit History
The Cedar Bayou ferry system in east Harris County evolved from early private crossings to county operated service. Key crossings included Milam's Crossing, Williams Landing, Schilling's Ferry, and the Ilfrey operation. By 1913 a two car boat served the route, duty rotating between county staff and users, with multiple incidents and a 1942 detour due to a barge crash. The last operator was John Frank Strickland, and passenger concerns led to closure after the Hwy 146 bridge opened. The era ended circa 1948 with a push to replace the aging craft.
