Merck Epidemiologist Says No Vioxx Heart Risk Before Sale
Merck's top epidemiologist testified that no significant studies indicated Vioxx could cause heart attacks before its 1999 market release. The plaintiff alleges a 59 year old man died in 2001 after eight months on Vioxx, and the case marks the first of over 4,000 suits reaching a jury. Merck disputes links to arrhythmia and notes later studies showed increased risk and a canceled heart-focused study.
