D Bailey, candidate for city commissioner, held a rally in Houston, stressing concise talks and offering free barbecue after the speeches. Supporters lined up for the meal as Bailey urged voters to turn out Saturday and cast ballots for him.
Baytown Refinery workers will receive back pay on August 1 with retroactive wage increases. Baytown Employes Federation president B Oliphint announced official confirmation from the Wage Stabilization Board that back pay and current salaries will be issued on one check. The new salary level includes a percent increase retroactive to last year and an hourly boost effective March 3, 1952.
New Woodmen of the World members will be initiated at 8 p.m. Monday in the WOW hall on Texas Street. Commander Herman Ash in charge. A fish supper will be served. Mrs. E. L. McDonald of San Antonio wrote Bay Sun asking prayers for those who helped after Brian A. McDonald died. Blood donations for the VA Hospital are being sought at Edge donation drive for ages 18 to 60 with a critical need as seven patients are being treated.

Houston July 2 Bob Tucker Democratic chairman says many conservative Democrats have joined Republicans in Harris county. He forecasts Loyalist Democrats may win precinct conventions this Saturday and expects a Harris county primary turnout around 175 000, surpassing the 1948 record of 101 804.
A Maxwell Construction Co foreman and his helper were injured at San Jacinto Elementary School when a concrete raf joist fell. George E. Williams, 37, suffered a broken leg, and Buddy Gene Bender, 18, was struck on the head but kept under observation. Both taken to Baytown Hospital.
Morris N Hall, a noted High lands contractor, posted bond and faced fresh swindle charges in Houston courts after arrest by Deputy Sheriff M M Brown on a $363.44 grocery theft claim against Texas Grocery Co Inc. Bond set at $500. Hall allegedly staged large grocery orders via packing firms, paid with bounced checks, and was linked to a July grocery pickup paid with a $368.04 Dallas bank check that also bounced. He turned himself in after investigators traced his truck license. Earlier felony theft charges from two Houston women and a case operator remain pending, with a prior postponement to repay victims.
United Nations troops recaptured the fog shrouded hill Old Baldy on Monday, ending a four day battle with heavy Chinese mortar and artillery fire. Allied forces pushed to the crest despite prior setbacks and supportive UN tanks, closing in at dawn as the fight concluded.

Becky Yo Smith, 18 month old daughter of Mr and Mrs C F Smith of 200 California, suffered bulbar polio last week but paralysis developed Sunday. She has slight paralysis in her right arm and is home healing. This is the last Baytown polio case for July, with 37 total in East Harris County since February.

Bingo games and noise drowned out the band and speakers, with a crying baby brought to the platform. A powerful earthquake leveled Tehachapi California leaving many dead and injured. Ray Cloud of United Press reported 11 dead, 35 injured with rescuers still pulling bodies from debris. The business district was flattened and residents searched for relatives amid confusion. Dr Charles Richter called it a major quake with intensity 7.75. Two railroad tunnels caved between Tehachapi and Marcel.
Eyewitness A J Cornelius recounts the Tehachapi California quake that collapsed a brick hotel. He describes walls buckling roofs caving in and bodies found as families sheltering inside were crushed. He began digging amid the devastation after seeing the former hotel crumble.

Jack Coffee, owner and operator of Coffee Clinic on Jones Road at Highlands, died at 1 45 p m Sunday in a Baytown hospital. Funeral services will be held at 4 pm today at Harthman chapel with Rev H H Rosser officiating. Burial will be in Hill of Rest cemetery. Survived by widow Ruth Lee Coffee two daughters Mildred Eaton of Paris and Ella Travis of Houston two sons Jack Coffee Jr of Jacinto City and Robert Lee Jacks of New Orleans. also grandchildren and one great grandchild. Pallbearers named W A W W Spivey George Ver Foltz.
Baytown Jaycees raised about 3500 dollars at the Turtle Derby final night drawing upwards of 3500 attendees. The event, benefiting the Quack Shack and teen programs, featured a Petiniaya turtle winner entered by McClurg Florist and two cream team entrants from local sponsors.
Lee College announces summer term begins Wednesday with classes starting on that date. Dean Walter Bie reports 78 students already registered for the session, which runs until August.
