Two absentee votes were cast Monday afternoon for the Lee College separation from the public schools. Absentee ballots may be cast 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the schools tax office until 5 p.m. Aug. 2. Property ownership is not a qualification to vote in this election.
Forecast calls for clear to partly cloudy skies and hot temperatures through Wednesday. Temperature expected around Tuesday near 79 degrees. Galveston tides down to low around 2.297 as tide highs around 5.15 feet.

Defense Secretary McNamara returned from a five day Viet Nam trip reporting marked deterioration since his last visit. He noted increased Viet Cong operations and disruption of communications but said the Vietnamese people continue to fight and U S forces have strengthened Vietnamese forces. He signaled recommending a firmer U S commitment to Viet Nam. A large Viet Cong attack on a Saigon area camp caused U S casualties, echoing ongoing combat concerns and security alerts in the Saigon capital.

Severe rains trigger 12 inch floods across northwest and west central Missouri. Smithville and Holden report homes washed away and multiple missing persons feared as crews rescue trapped residents from trees and high water. Bridges washed out. rivers Little Platte and Fishing River swollen. evacuations in Tracy, Missouri City and Mosby.
Baytown police investigated property damage at Robert E. Lee High School and the wood shop tennis courts and main building. Damage included broken windows light bulbs light fixtures protection glasses nets and concrete totaling 106.16 dollars.
President Johnson named Supreme Court Justice Arthur J. Goldberg as the new U S ambassador to the United Nations in a White House ceremony. Goldberg accepted, said Adlai Stevenson’s call for peace remains the world message, and vowed to advance the rule of law in international relations. He is 57, Chicago native, longtime Labor secretary under Kennedy, and had been a Supreme Court justice since then.
The Baytown Sun will begin operating next Monday in its new plant at Memorial Drive. The move will start Friday morning and by Monday the paper will be produced there but printed at the Ashbel and Pearce plant until the new press is ready. Advertising deadlines and church page timing will shift during the move with the press arrival planned from Joplin Missouri around July 28.
State Rep. Bob Eckhardt of Houston will address Precinct 100 Democrats at a Thursday gathering at the Holiday Inn. He plans to discuss a Texas Constitution amendment on the September 7 ballot to increase the state Senate membership from 31 to 39. W Tidmion chairs Precinct 100.
Sun Classified Ad users urged to submit ads early as the firm moves into a new building on Memorial Drive. Ads for Friday edition due by 12:30 a.m. Thursday, and ads for Sunday edition must reach the office by 4:59 p.m. Thursday.
The Senate passed an administration opposed cold war GI Bill of Rights, 69 to 17, after rejecting limits to combat zone veterans. It sets education allowances and home loan guarantees for post Korean War veterans through July 1, 1967, with monthly education stipends and loan guarantees up to 7500 for homes and 4000 for nonresidential real estate.

Lee County school board rejects a motion to call an election naming Lee College regents, by a 42 vote. Trustees dispute reporting of the action and discuss authority to call elections under Article 281501, noting no current statutory authorization for an election on regents. A separation vote would come later if petitions and legal steps align.
A Texas Highway Department official said Spur 310 Decker Drive interchange work with Interstate 10 will wait until fall due to lack of interstate funds. The project, estimated at 1 million dollars, was to include sharpwharf by Bayway Drive to I 10, with a completion goal of a year and a half. Spur 230 work from Airhart Drive to Bayway Drive has been ongoing for over a year as a joint state county project with Harris County providing right of way.
Civil rights forces step up public accommodation tests in Bogalusa after Justice Department suits to halt police and KKK interference with demonstrators. A. Z. Young proclaimed plans for widescale demonstrations while Justice officials sought injunctions in New Orleans and the town faced white attacks on biracial pickets.
