Cedar Point dispute pits Houston against Yates in landmark case
The Cedar Point land saga began when Tabitha Kincaid sold land to Sam Houston after Orton liams died at Cedar Point in 1827. Andrew Janeway Yates, a Liberty lawyer, claimed a different sale. In 1840 they clashed in a Texas Supreme Court case that Houston won in 1848. Houston used Cedar Point as a summer retreat and the property remained a family residence after the Civil War. Yates, a Phi Beta Kappa Union College alum and educator advocate, left Texas for California in 1851, dying there in 1856, after a notable early career in revolution-era Texas and education reform.
