The largest space vehicle yet launched rose 950 miles above the Atlantic as a giant 135 foot diameter balloon detached from a Thor booster. It expanded to full size and drifted in predawn skies over Cape Canaveral for about ten minutes before haze obscured it. No communications tests were conducted.

Four U S Air Force crew members aboard a two engine transport were found alive after a crash 150 miles northeast of Saigon. A rescue sling lifted two survivors to a hovering helicopter and they were taken to a field hospital at Nha Trang while others remained with a non landing rescue. Baytown police pay raise referendum set for Aug twenty fifth
Baytown voters head to the polls Saturday August 25 to decide a 45 dollar a month across the board raise for 36 Baytown police officers under Civil Service. The measure could force the city to raise taxes to fund the pay hike and potentially lift raises for the remaining 159 city employees. The council approved the election after petitions showed sufficient support. If approved and no other raises are granted the city would need about three cents more in the tax rate to cover costs. A council committee was formed to study the proposal and report back.
