Highlands residents report multiple car burglaries along Interstate 10 near Garth Road including Jeff Benson who lost over 2000 dollars in valuables from his truck outside a Red Lobster. Jeremy Borque, an employee at Baby's R Us, also had his dashboard stolen. More locals share similar stories of break ins while inside stores or restaurants.
Twenty year Red Cross volunteer Alice Wells patrols Liberty County for house fires serving families in Baytown, Chambers, Liberty and East Harris counties. Branch director Fran Parent says 300 volunteers cover about 450000 people and more help is needed for disaster relief, shelters and training. See cross page 11A.
Family and friends of 5 year old Rebecka Becka Hutzley gathered at the Baytown Optimist Club to raise money for mounting medical bills. About 200 attendees paid $10 for barbecue plates, bought raffle tickets for an automatic go cart, and enjoyed games while a 50 Dollar Moonwalks moonwalk and kiddy train were provided. Bill Callahan of Walking Man Promotions said the family has faced many medical challenges since Becka was born with multiple serious conditions.
The Smoke Free Coalition and Baytown Citizens for Property Rights seek to place ordinances on the November ballot. Both claim sufficient signatures, 603, will be ready for City Clerk Lorri Coody by week’s end. James Haarmeyer says his group is prepared to oppose but will wait for the coalition’s petition to move.
