In Austin lawmakers in a special session pushed a partial reform to Texas franchise tax amid 80 years of history. Negotiators aim to close loopholes and fund school property tax relief while acknowledging current proposals fall short of modernizing the system.
Defense Department says Col. Marvin L. Foster of Hubbard Texas and three other Army personnel identified after remains recovered in 2000 from a March 16 1969 crash. Foster died with five others. remains returned to families. Also named are Capt. Davie’ R. Smith Sgt 1st Class Michael L Batt and Sgt 1st Class Raymond E Bobe.
A 14 year old girl injured by a shark in the Gulf of Mexico underwent foot tendon repair surgery in Galveston. Dr. Kelly Carmichael of the University of Texas Medical Branch said the operation was successful and the patient, Lydia Paulk, is expected to return to soccer. Relatives said she was collecting discarded bottles at Port Bolivar when attacked.
