Hodnick Blames Strike Fear for OCAW Defeat at Humble Baytown

International representative Anthony R. Hodnick said the OCAW loss in Humble Oil Baytown Refinery talks came from fear of a strike, not real support. Baytown Local 4333 will decide on its charter, as production and maintenance workers backed an independent Gulf Coast Industrial Workers Union 1244 to 1. If charter is surrendered, the international would hold assets in trust for five years. NLRB certification expected soon confirms the independent union as bargaining agent. Hodnick noted OCAW will not contest the result and awaits the new negotiation method’s outcome with Kirkley leading the new union.

Aircraft Carrier Open To Public In Galveston

The USS Lexington, a 42,000 ton aircraft carrier, opened to the public at Galveston with noon to 4 pm hours on Saturday and Sunday at Piers 16 17 and 18 foot of 16 Street. More than 12 000 people from Baytown visited Friday and hundreds were turned away after the 3 pm deadline. A five block long line formed at noon Friday and officials expected longer lines on weekend days when more workers would be off. The Lexington sails Monday with a crew of 1 850 and capacity to hoard about 30 tourists per tour, which lasts about a half hour. Cameras permitted. Captain Lucien C Powell noted most sailors would remain in the Galveston Houston area during the stay. The ship Lexington class was launched in 1922 and replaced the sunken Lexington of the early war days. Rear Adm She man T Wetmore boarded the ship upon arrival. Two helicopter-towed points and a Coast Guard cutter aided traffic as crowds watched the carrier slowly enter the channel. (See SHIP, Page 2).
