County Tax Rate May Be Same Next Fiscal Year
County Auditor Grady Fullerton told Commissioners Court the 1972 county tax rate should hold at 2.16 dollars per 100 of assessed valuation for the next year. He proposed a 900000 supplemental budget, with the county share rising from 1.25 to 1.30, funded by reducing the state ad valorem tax from 32 to 27 cents. The hospital district tax would stay at 59.25 cents. If approved, it would mark the first time since 1968 that the rate and assessment ratio remained unchanged between tax years. The court split on increasing the assessment ratio, with Judge Bill Elliott and Commissioner Jamie Bray opposing. The measure would not aid county school districts. As a guide, a 10000 home would pay 46 dollars in county and state taxes, a 20000 home 98.40, and a 30000 home 152.40. The state tax cut shifts funds to the county, decreasing toward a 10 cent per 100 value by year end. Fullerton suggested most of the five cent shift go to interest and redemption funds to retire debt, with 806000 of the supplemental budget to the county general fund and the rest to road and bridge funds. The court has delayed voting machine purchases for November pending the budget size. last year, 300000 was available for the supplemental budget.
