Baytown Night organizers W. L. Ward and M. W. Berry announced a chartered bus for Colt fans to attend the July 20 game between the Colt .45s and the St. Louis Cardinals in Baytown. The plan follows numerous requests from fans and former Oilers supporters.
A Baytown Night dance at Cedar Bayou Junior High Hall runs 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. with Robbie Bennett Janet Atkins and Mally Shields, six weeks of Spanish study, and bus transportation from the Chamber of Commerce to Colt Stadium. Tickets are 1.50 round trip. reservations via the Chamber. Former Oiler players and the Robert E. Lee High School band will attend, plus a presentation for Stan Musial. Also notes on public events, registrations for swim lessons, and local weather.
Baytown will hold a special session to set a date for a vote on a proposed $45 per month pay raise for Civil Service police department employees. The council would need to call an election if petitions are accepted or by charter authority, with potential tax rate impact if the measure passes.
The Baytown City Council honored Edward Eddie Huron Blair Mann and Elo Veselka with the Clyde Jones Community Service Award for civic work and care for neighbors. The Baytown La Porte Tunnel closed for one hour 52 minutes in the early hours Wednesday for electrical system upgrades. About 50 vehicles were halted, 28 northbound and 22 southbound, during the shut period from 2:03 to 3:55 am. The nine year old tunnel has carried roughly 32 million vehicles, 20 million in six years and 12 million in the last three. The closure aimed to modernize lighting and ventilation with new switches in the control panel at the Baytown entrance.
A white fuzzy mechanical toy mongoose escaped from a patient’s room at Gulf Coast Hospital during a visit by his eight year old son. The faux mongoose caused chaos as nurses and a doctor chased it amid a bizarre attempt to lure it back with a gory tasting dish. The hospital described the creature as a toy, not a real animal, ending the scare.
A helicopter will deliver thousands of polio vaccine doses to Baytown as part of a Sunday drive at 10 a.m. July 22 leaving stations at Sun Baytown Junior High and local schools.
