Lee College regents advanced a master plan update and construction of a new performing arts center amid questions on scope and funding. Kirksey architect Wes Good sought final approval for the plan updating a 1999 version, with the center to anchor the campus front door at Texas Avenue and Market Street.
The Municipal Development District earmarks 140000 for Texas Avenue streetscape as a local match for a 700000 federally funded grant. The plan segments downtown revitalization into Texas Avenue Market Street and Alexander Drive with the first phase focused on Texas Avenue including possible sidewalk widening lighting benches and trash receptacles. A 20 percent local match is required for federal funds and officials say budgeting in advance accelerates project progress.
After months of controversy the Baytown Housing Authority started a new phase with the resignation of longtime executive director Bill Eiland and three new board appointees. Mayor DonCarlos replaced three members on June 22. new members Mark Tiller Fran Parent and Fred Aguilar took oaths and joined the boards for BHA and affiliated entities. Lawrence Wallace remains, with a resident seat open.
Jewel Lee Lindsey, 71, woke by granddaughter at 4 a.m. to a smell. eight hours later flames roared from the attic destroying a lifetime in the Myrtle Street home. Lindsey and her two grandchildren escaped unharmed but lost most belongings to the blaze. Looters reportedly stole items from the scene. Fire details continue on page 6A.
