EPA driven cap repair history at San Jacinto pits accelerates cleanup
The pits have required repairs across 2012 to 2018 due to thin or missing cap and dioxin exposure. In 2017 after Harvey, dioxin levels reached 70 000 parts per trillion. EPA approved a remedy to excavate 212 000 cubic yards of contaminated material, while parties design a temporary cap to contain releases. The cap weighs 59 000 tons, spans 16 acres, and aims to withstand a 100 year flood. The project funds total about 115 million dollars and will take 29 months after an agreement, with the armored cap currently preventing further dioxin release into the San Jacinto River.
