Drowning in SIRA canal after deputy jumps in to save dog
Deputy general manager Jace Houston described a deadly undertow in a 30 mile canal used by SIRA to supply Exxon and Chevron. Wotipka, his dog, and his wife attempted rescues as bystanders helped. The body was recovered about 150 feet from the jump in. Investigators call it an accidental drowning with no feasible safety fix for open canals.
