Salt Water Threatens Baytown Rice Crops During Drought

In Baytown area a prolonged drought endangers about 15 000 acres of rice as Trinity River water runs low near Liberty at four feet. No rain in the Trinity watershed for weeks leaves farmers dependent on scarce irrigation. Salt intrusion from bays reaches Old River cut-off and Mont Belvieu pumping station, with salt levels around 78 grains per gallon. Farmers debate a mouth levy versus securing water and pray for rain while 75 000 acres rely on Trinity water from Southern Devers Dayton and 2 600 acres west of Goose Creek from San Jacinto. Potential embankment costs rise to 3 per acre if salt is blocked.
