Baytown leaders and Chamber of Commerce executives urged Missouri Pacific to study alternate routes for a spur to the U S Steel mill site. Proposals include a Goose Creek east bank path and a northerly route paralleling I 1, with hearings and right of way actions pending.
Party for Mr and Mrs Aubrey Brooks from 7 to 9 pm Thursday at their Sun Oil Road home. Friends invited to attend. OWLS Team of Central Little League champions held a Wednesday playoff win followed by an ice cream party. Plays cancelled at Baytown Little Theater due to Harold Bone death with future date to be announced. Harold Bone dies aged 64 in Baytown hospital. Weather outlook cloudy to partly cloudy with possible thundershowers and gusty winds. Thursday high 90, low 74. Sun's Weather Station reports Wednesday range 79 to 91 with 86 at 1 am Thursday. Galveston tides low at 1 am, high at 1 pm and 3:18 pm Friday.

The Dunham family travels to Madill Ohio after the death of Henry Dunham early Wednesday. Funeral services are planned in Madill at a time to be announced.
Groundbreaking ceremonies for Baytown's new city hall and civic center will begin at 5 a.m. Friday on the Market Street Road side of the 29 acre tract in the 2500 block of Market Street. The Rev Edwin Summers will give the invocation and Mayor Seaborn Cravey will speak. Jack Kimmons will join the program with remarks. Scale models of the buildings will be displayed. City Manager Fritz Lanham urged all Baytown residents to attend the first spade turn. Mayor Cravey to strike first spade.
Tom Reese, a University of Houston law graduate and former Jasper High School and Sam Houston State College attendee, is elected associate editor of the Houston Law Review. He has served on Federal Judge John R. Brown's Houston staff and earned the St John Garwood and Phi Delta Phi awards. Reese plans to join the Baylor law faculty in September after August graduation.
Seven inches of rain drenched areas of the extreme upper Frio River and its tributaries triggering flash floods. Low water crossings were closed and residents urged to evacuate while ranchers were told to watch rising waters on the Frio and Nueces rivers.
About 25 cars of a Southern Pacific freight train derailed along US 59 between Splendora and New Caney in Montgomery County Texas. Several derailed cars caught fire, with four box cars and a hopper car carrying raw plastic pellets and vinyl chloride. Firefighters contained the blazes as traffic was redirected. no injuries were reported.
Albert Thompson U S Representative from Texas Eighth District will lead a delegation with Sargent Shriver at Houston International Airport. They will attend a picnic supper and news conference at Office of Economic Opportunity headquarters on Eastex Freeway, visit four HAY neighborhood offices, end at Albert Thomas Youth Center, then Shriver heads to Texas Southern University for breakfast and poverty-area tours with OEO leaders.
After five years of talks the United States and South Korea finalize a Status of Forces treaty in Seoul. Secretary Dean Rusk and Foreign Minister Lee Tong Won will sign on Saturday. The pact gives Korea primary jurisdiction over major crimes by U S servicemen off duty.
Baytown school district requires compulsory immunizations for all pupils entering school in September. First registration demands a tuberculosis exam and up-to-date records signed by a physician, with seventh grade entry needing boosters for smallpox diphtheria polio and a TB exam. Senate Bill 130 mandates examinations for all first and seventh graders and transfers from other states. Parents are advised it takes two months to begin and complete the series for those with no prior immunizations.
British Prime Minister Harold Wilson pursues a Viet Nam peacemaker role with visits to Moscow and Washington. His chances for success are not high. Republican governors resist blanket endorsement of President Johnson's Viet Nam policies. A South Vietnamese force destroys a main Viet Cong depot in the Mekong Delta with claims of over 155 enemy killed. The Defense Department allows hardship discharges for servicemen who will be sole surviving sons. The midsummer recess on Capitol Hill is noted as quiet.

Baytown's new city hall and recreation center ground breaking is set for Friday at 5 p.m. despite a union strike. Bayport Construction Co. signed a separate agreement with the Laborers International Union of North America, allowing resumption of work at the Bay Plaza Shopping Center on Highway 146. A federal mediator seeks another meeting between striking workers and contractors. The weeklong strike began in 71 South Texas counties, idling about 15 000 workers and delaying roughly 300 million dollars in projects. Negotiations involving three locals of the LIUNA and Houston Chapter of the Associated General Contractors and the Construction Employers Association were paused after the labor contract expired. Key issues include wages, a union hiring hall, and jurisdiction. Current LIUNA wage coverage stands at 2.64 dollars per hour.
Registration for six week remedial and developmental reading courses at Lee College runs through July 18 in the registrar Office of Mrs. Bessie Durham. Elementary class meets 9 50 to 11 10 a m and junior high 11 15 to 12 35 p m daily. Fee is 25 plus 2 for materials plus 12 75 out of district. Dean Rundell says the program aids younger students with reading.
Twenty seven Texas teachers including Betty Butler of 103 Queens Court and Diane Dauphin of 2105 Adams will join a workshop at the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosi from July 21 to August 6 in Mexico.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk warned China the United States would respond with whatever means needed if an American ally in Asia is struck by nuclear weapons. He called such an attack insane and affirmed treaty obligations would guide U S response, during a press conference with Japanese Foreign Minister Shiina after a U S Japanese cabinet meeting.
Funeral services for George Everett McKinstry 86 of Baytown will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Paul A. Lee Funeral Home Chapel. McKinstry, a Baytown resident since 1917, died Wednesday in a Baytown hospital after a long illness. Officiating ministers include Revs. Harbaugh Summers and Jordan. Interment Cedar Crest Cemetery with Goose Creek Lodge AF and AM in charge at the graveside. He is survived by his wife Winnie. son J S McKinstry of Houston. two granddaughters Sylvia and Mrs. Jack Feese. grandson Mike A. Dixon. brother J S McKinstry of Newton Falls Ohio. and stepdaughter Mrs. Wallace Smith of Houston. He was an eyewitness to 30 years of Baytown history and was honored in 1965 by Goose Creek Lodge.
