Eisenhower Says Cuba Base Risk Seen as Remote

President Eisenhower said the United States would act as needed if Russia builds a submarine base in Cuba, but he sees such a base as unlikely. Grass Roots Special Heads To Los Angeles For Coverage

The Baytown grass roots special heads to the National Democratic convention in Los Angeles armed with typewriters tricks of the trade and loose change. Delegates from Harris County including H. T. Hulme will fly in a chartered plane with much of the Texas contingent arriving from Dallas and Austin to bolster Lyndon Johnson's campaign. The group plans to meet fellow reporters and cover events around the Johnson City stop and the Pett. The Texas delegation aims to gain support for LBJ as Johnson delegates prepare to campaign in Rosebud, Johnson City, and nearby towns.

Injuries Fatal To Baytown Man

Archie Crafton Houston 45 of Baytown died in a Galveston hospital from injuries suffered June 27 when he fell from a scaffold while working at Amoon Park near Attiy Lorna. He belonged to Electrical Workers Local 440 and was employed by Pleil Electric Co. Funeral services 2 p.m. Thursday at Paul A Lee Funeral Home in Houston with Rev P Walter Honekelt officiating. Burnt was interred in Forest Park Cemetery. Survivors include daughter Georgie Jackson of Pasadena mother Mrs M G Houston of Baytown and grandchildren Catherine Jackson and Lee Ann Jackson of Pasadena.

Phone Strike Seen Soon Unless Contract Okayed

A strike against General Telephone Co. of the Southwest affecting almost all Baytown Exchange employees could be called within days unless a contract is agreed. Marvin Collins of the Communications Workers of America said the union canvassed a nationwide vote in support of striking if necessary. Federal Mediator Walter White attended talks in San Angelo as negotiations neared two weeks of bargaining on grievances and time accumulation with wages not at issue. If begun, Baytown service would be curtailed with supervisory staff to handle long distance calls.

15 Year Old Hurt In Bike Accident

A Raytown boy named Jet was injured in a bicycle collision at 10 29 p m. Police patrolling officer A L Wilewy and others investigated. Dwain Irby, 24, of Gulf Coast Holihind, faced charges after his car struck Jet Stanley and a cyclist was treated for minor injuries.

Thrasher Dies at 75 in Highlands with Family T

Fred Leroy Thrasher 75 of Highlands died at home after a lengthy illness. Survived by wife Olive Thrasher a daughter and several relatives. Funeral arrangements are pending with services expected in Highlands and additional family members noted in the notice.

International Honor Won By REL Key Club

For the third year the Robert E. Lee High School Key Club won international recognition for community service. At the Boston convention Steve Hudnall and John Kilgore wired that REL placed second with a single project, Operation Sunshine aiding Baytown seniors. The club organized surveys, dinners, home repairs, yard work, and garden chores. Kilgore led the winning Texas Oklahoma District committee and will be lieutenant governor for Division Three. Hudnall becomes REL president. The club has a history of top projects and active civic involvement with local groups and school programs.

San Jacinto deepening study advances with support from Thomas

A recommendation on the San Jacinto project is to be forwarded before July 31 as Col Hansen retires. U.S. Rep. Albert Thomas backs the study and has pushed Congress to authorize the feasibility assessment. The Engineers study would evaluate deepening from the San Jacinto intersection with the Houston Ship Channel to near the Highway 90 crossing. In 1967 the port authority pressed Rep. Thomas to secure approval and funding for the study.

Census count debate unsettles Baytown residents

Baytown residents questioned Harris County census figures after Ammie Piatrict Census Director Hargrove Smith released a federal count well above Houston totals. He noted county figures excluding Houston reached 197,993, with earlier estimates for nearby areas around 32,008 and 27,900 for Paytann. Smith blamed misprints and confusion in the reporting from Washington and a rival publication.
