Building Fund Red At Sterling Overruns Cause Incurred
The Baytown Sun investigates a $600,000 deficit in the school district building fund tied to the Ross Sterling High School project. Voters approved $2.95 million in bonds in 1963, but trustees in 1965 authorized $3.61 million, a $660,000 overrun. Funds from maintenance, interest, cost reductions, and Harlem School were considered to cover the gap, with Harlem School expenditures remaining high. Architect James A. Davis links the overrun to a larger, more adequate facility than initially planned, as studies by advisory committees guided expanded floor space from 175,000 to 260,922 square feet.
