Baytown observers anticipate a hot and dry Independence Day with clear to partly cloudy skies and brisk winds across Texas. Officials urge safety as the nation marks its 75th birthday, noting no local ceremonies planned and many services closed. Fireworks are restricted in town under city ordinances.
The Railroad Commission approved a rule allowing 600 feet of surface casing or 600 feet plus cement, instead of 200 feet, to protect water sands in Goose Creek Field. The measure, effective immediately, supersedes a prior emergency rule and applies mainly within the Goose Creek Field’s 2400-acre area, with Rule 12(A) governing freshwater sands in non field areas.

G I McClain, ferry Massey pilot, reported a woman jumped overboard at 45 p.m. last night. A man, likely her husband, also jumped in to save her. both were saved from the water though the woman resisted rescue. Witnesses described the attempt and the ferry stopping as a passenger shouted alarm. The incident occurred amid drinking.
Four members of the Communist National Committee failed to appear in federal court in New York by the 8:30 am deadline. Their $80,000 bail was forfeited as the FBI widened its search. Gus Hall Gilbert Green Henry Winston and Robert G Thompson were among those convicted in 1949 of conspiring to advocate overthrow of the government. Three Civil Rights Congress trustees Abner Green Frederik Vanderbilt Field and Robert Dunn also faced bonds forfeiture. Subpoenas were issued for Alpheus Hunt and Dashell Hammett due to signatures on bail bonds.
A three man committee appointed by School Board President A. R. Stark will study the district insurance needs and report next Monday night. Trustees Harry Hartman James Hatson and Thea Wilburn comprise the panel with four Bay Town Insurance Exchange reps presenting coverage details. The district carries 1 709 968 dollars of insurance on 43 buildings costing 15 000 dollars annually in premiums.
John Kader was informed by letter that he received a field promotion to captain on June 24. He has served in Korea for eight months and is eligible for the rotation plan. His wife, Mrs. Kader of Baytown, says he is currently a prisoner of war in Poland for a year and may be recalled for active duty, with no homecoming date yet.

An eastern front three-hour artillery duel reported heavy counter-battery fire, while the western end saw Allied forces seize a 3,500-foot peak after three days of hard fighting against about 5,000 Chinese troops.
Galveston church laymen seize on a two week petition drive to close the island resort town. W H White, head of Civic Affairs for the Association of Churchmen, says about 1000 residents have signed in support of keeping the town closed and cleaning up the area.
The Missouri River breached the Cal Du Sac levee near St. Charles flooding at least 1000 acres of farmland and threatening up to 25 000 acres toward the Mississippi. Coast Guard Lt. Ira Bratcher said the swollen river advanced faster than crews could halt it as workers shifted sandbags and evacuated a heavy train from the sagging levee amid rising flood levels.
Ridgway asks for the first ceasefire parley Thursday amid fighting along Korea’s battle lines. A heavily disputed broadcast claims U S forces threaten Northeast China and Chinese volunteers rally to aid Korea while Ridgway pushes for white flag liaison officers at the 38th parallel Kaesong site to set ceasefire talks.
Major General Gerald Thomas commander of the First Marine Division escaped serious injury when his helicopter engine failed at 200 feet. The helicopter plunged but rotor inertia slowed its fall and tore the craft, touching sand in a river bed before coming to a halt. Pilot Wild Cazinee and Thomas survived.
