Fifty four light planes depart Long Beach Municipal in California for the ninth All Women Trans-Continental air race. The Powder Puff Derby covers 2800 miles from Long Beach to Barnes-Westfield in Springfield Massachusetts with stock model planes under 300 horsepower. Pilots include many veterans, taking off at one minute intervals.
