Residential Heart Campaign Set To Begin February 21

Mrs. Larry Woodcox will chair the Baytown Unit heart drive with district chairmen Mrs. Gary Kohler and Mrs. W. R. Holder directing areas near Ross S Sterling High School and Robert E Lee High School. A meeting for volunteers is set for 7 pm at the HL&P Service Center on Ward Road. The campaign funds research and education on heart disease and offers free blood pressure screenings and CPR classes. The drive seeks more volunteers as cardiovascular disease claimed over 950000 lives last year with widespread economic impact totaling 26.7 billion dollars.

West Sewer District plant plan eyed by Baytown council

Baytown City Council will decide on Langford Engineering plans for the West Sewer District treatment plant near Interstate 10. Transcripts of last week’s public hearing will be sent to the Texas Water Quality Board and EPA after council action, with objections raised to Spring Gully discharge into Burnet Bay and calls to instead use San Jacinto River for effluent.

Services for Paul L. DeVerter Held at St. Mark's

Funeral services for Paul L. DeVerter 82 of 1805 E Texas are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at St Mark's United Methodist Church with Rev J A Chapman and Rev P Walter Henckell officiating. DeVerter a Baytown native and former Exxon Baytown Refinery lab manager died Saturday at home. He served as a director of the Baytown Kiwanis Club and was a past resident of the Baytown Shrine Club and Goose Creek Country Club president. He was born in Waterman Indiana in 1894 and earned AB from Wabash College and an MA in chemistry from Wisconsin. He fought in World War I earning the Purple Heart and retired as a major. He later worked for DuPont and Standard Oil of New Jersey and contributed as a petroleum consultant in World War II. He held four patents on inhibitors and remained active in ASTM and API.

Baytown Education Association to Host NEA Leader McGarigal

John T. McGarigal will speak at the Baytown Education Association meeting at 7 p.m. February 8 at Pumphrey Elementary. He is NEA secretary treasurer and serves on the NEA executive and program budgets committees. He has held leadership roles in multiple state and local education associations. A reception will follow for educators to meet him.
