Bayshore Gun Club to Hold 20th Oyster Fry Feb 7

The Bayshore Rod Reel and Gun Club plans its 20th annual oyster fry on February 7 at 3223 Minnesota and Huggins. About 900 gallons of oysters from Smith Point will feed a large crowd with proceeds donated to the Bay town emergency corps. Tickets advance through club members and local banks.

Next Police Test Slated For Feb. 18

Civil Service examination for Baytown Police Department patrolmen will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday February 18 in the Community Building auditorium at 2407 Market. Applications available from Civil Service Director Sam Alford or Baytown Police Department and due by 5 p.m. February 17. Eligible ages 21 to 35, height 5 feet 8 inches, weight at least 145 pounds. Beginning pay is 736 dollars per month.

Record Warmth Lingers in Baytown Week of New Highs

Five straight days of record high temperatures in the Baytown area. National Weather Service says warmth continues but no more records are foreseen soon. Forecast calls for a 50 percent chance of rain Friday night and Saturday with lows in the mid 50s and highs in the mid 70s.

Istanbul crash kills 42 aboard Turkish Airlines jet

An American, a Briton, a West German and 38 Turks were aboard the Turkish Airlines jet that crashed into the sea near Istanbul Airport during a city wide power failure. Officials said none survived as the plane sank and rescue efforts were halted by bad weather. Pilots walked off the job and warned they would stay grounded until improved safety at airports.

County Commissioners Adopt 255 Million Budget

Nixon Papers and White House Tapes Declared Government Property

A federal judge ruled that about 7 million documents and Nixon White House tapes belong to the U.S. government, nullifying a 1974 agreement granting Nixon partial access. Manpower Chief Dittman Named Acting County Official

Col Henry Dittman former Baytown councilman appointed acting head of Harris County Manpower by the County Commissioners Court replacing fired Jeff Campbell. Lindsay says appointment temporary until program strengthens. Campbell was fired after executive-session decision. Dittman plans to finish current term and not seek re election in April. Manpower is a $2 million federal program aiding the unemployed.

Fonteno Calls For Voters To Decide Pay Raise

Precinct 2 Commissioner Jim Fonteno says he will not accept a 12 percent pay raise in the $68.2 million operating budget until it is approved by the people. He would donate any legally required raise to his church if required. Fonteno, a 29 day member of the court, supports other commissioners’ raises but declines to vote for his own. The budget debate also included a dispute over road and bridge funding, resolved by a $350,000 increase for Precinct 3.

Lions Open Summer Camp Applications for Disabled Children
