In Austin AP bulletin, Bart Hodges president of the Texas Association of Life Underwriters asked the legislature to tighten licensing requirements for life insurance agents to upgrade the profession and provide greater protection to Texas citizens.
BAYTOWN OPTIMISTS will resume bicycle marking from Saturday to Sunday at multiple schools. A dance at Knights of Columbus Hall runs 9 p.m. to a.m. Music by Gil Baca’s Orchestra. AAUW meets Monday at Culpepper’s, Home Owners Club postpones to Feb 3. Gulf Coast Gun Club meets Tuesday at the Chamber of Commerce building with memberships and keys. New officers to be elected.
The Bay town Houston area saw cloudy and mild conditions through Wednesday with temperatures ranging from 60s to low 70s. Monday afternoon reached 74 degrees, surpassing the 78 degree record high for the day set in 1947, per the U S Weather Bureau in Houston.

Cedar Bayou poet John Peter Sjolander died in 1938 leaving a rich legacy of verse. A farmer, school board member, and a figure in local life, he bridged agriculture and literature. His poetry celebrated community, family, and toil, with works like Salt of the Earth and the Sea and Toiler's Song.

A National Airlines jet is hijacked over Florida by two men. one carries a .38 revolver and the other a bomb, forcing the pilot to divert to Cuba as authorities scramble to respond to the incident.

Trustees voted 4 to 3 to appoint Wilton A. Roper William A. McElhannon and Norman O. McElvany to the tax equalization board setting their first meeting for Feb 12. A secret ballot decided the third member with McElvany favored. The board plans rotation of terms though current law limits terms to one year.
The deadline to pay 1968 ad valorem school taxes is Friday by close of business. Hobart Enoch, School District Tax Assessor-Collector, urges payments by mail postmarked Jan 31 without penalty. Current collections stand at about 90.54 percent with expectations to exceed 96 percent. Giant Humble Oil and Refining Co paid its full bill, contributing over half of the district total of 6,515,674. Gulf Oil and U.S. Steel are among the top taxpayers. ICD Course BAYTOWN Civil Defense unit to run a shelter living training Friday evening through Saturday morning at city hall basement. Instructor H. Zimmerman asks participants to bring inflatable mattress, cot, blanket, and sleep-appropriate clothing.

The aim is to review the district, draft a job description, design a brochure, and advise the board during the search for a new superintendent to replace George H. Gentry. The consultant would cost about a day’s work for five to six days, with letters to local teacher associations seeking nominations.
Ron Frederickson a 33 year old blind diabetic from Minneapolis withdrew from kidney dialysis and died Monday after weeks of declining health. He had endured pain and inactivity and told his wife he was ready to die, expressing a belief that death marked a new beginning. His wife Karen Frederickson survives.
