A large flight of U S planes took to the air as a show of warning to Red China. The report notes air activity and political signaling amid ongoing tensions, with emphasis on U S military posture and regional security.
United States officials indicated Americans will likely be barred from visiting relatives jailed in Communist China as tension over Formosa grows. The State Department has not decided whether to allow relatives of seven imprisoned Americans to accept China’s invitation, citing inability to guarantee protection. The U S has no diplomatic relations with Communist China and officials fear hostilities in the Formosa Strait.
Lee college offices close Friday at 1 pm marking officially the end of the fall semester. They reopen at 9 am Monday for spring registration while grades will be mailed Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. Dean Walter Rundell notes potential shorthand class if more requests arrive. Spring registration is expected to set a new high total.

The State Highway Commission will review Highway 73 bridge construction to see if a faster program is needed as bridges for San Jacinto Old and Lost and Trinity river crossings may outpace road bids. A two cent gasoline tax bill under Shivers may fund finishing the job this year, with San Jacinto bridge possibly done in 90 days and Old and Lost late summer.
A. N. Johnson was re-elected chairman of the Baytown Society for Crippled Children which runs the Baytown cerebral palsy treatment center. C. E. Smith Jr. is vice chairman and R. D. Martin treasurer. Mrs. Alfred Moskowitz became secretary, taking over from Mrs. J. M. D. Heald. The society plans to return 878 dollars to the Community Chest from a sixth thousand two hundred ten dollar budget for 195. The center reported three thousand one hundred visits.
Twenty year old Bennie Middaugh will present a benefit song recital at 8 p.m. Friday in Lee College auditorium. The program includes French songs by Dupare, German songs by Schubert and Schumann, American songs by Naginski, Irish songs, an English ballad Lord Randall, and the Carousel Soliloquy. Proceeds aid Middaugh’s studies at North Texas State College. His accompanist is John C. Smith Jr. from SMU. Tickets $1 for adults, 50 cents for children, at Black’s and Tri City No. 1 Pharmacys or at the door.

President Eisenhower's Formosa defense resolution nears its first Senate hurdle as committee members hear from Joint Chiefs including Ridgway. House approval earlier sent the measure to the Senate with broad support but concerns about manpower and extended commitments remain unresolved.
Baytown officials plan to set a municipal election date for April 5 and discuss a range of issues at Thursday night meeting. Topics include candidate filings, a $60,000 fire station project, a door to door photo ordinance, and progress reports on city projects. A water line discussion and committee reports from West Main area may also be on the agenda as officials prepare for the upcoming election.
J Winston Hayes secretary of the Baytown Employes Federation resigns effective Jan 31 to attend Lee College. R D Clark, BER rep from the Baytown refinery contact tube plant, will take over Feb 1. Hayes, a 10 year veteran, will pursue studies in mathematics chemistry and physics while continuing to reside with family at 616 West Francis Baytown.

West Main Civic League plans opposition to city taxes on a parcel once owned by Polly Civic League. About 40 members met at NuGuil Vale, elected officers, and formed a four member committee to meet with the city council. President Hoffpauir led calls to tax the lot only from consolidation in 1948 to present, noting the land served public and tax benefits.
Formos reports say Nationalist bombers attacked north of Tachen and Yi Kangshan island, sinking a 1,500-ton Communist warship and silencing artillery. Vice Admiral Pride led 300-plus planes in the assault as U S carrier forces near Formosa reinforce evacuations.
Farmer John Darrow found a heavy object in his field Wednesday about Inches high and wide, believed by some to be a meteorite. Two men required two hacksaw cuts to free it. meteorologists from nearby universities viewed the object but offered no firm opinion.
Goose Creek Independent School District launches its first complete district wide census of all children with 19 women canvassing. Supervising Supt. George Gentry leads the effort, assigning 39 census takers to cover sections and ensure "to get everybody" in the district. Names of the census takers are listed for public notice and community cooperation is requested.
Harry Weaver and two stepdaughters post a $10,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of Mia Weaver's killer after a bomb blasted her car in San Angelo Texas. District Attorney Aubrey Stokes says the killer is an intelligent local man and more witnesses will be consulted before any action.
