70 Men Involved- 2 Guard Units Here In First Airborne Reserve
Henry IXOLCOMB reports on the first reserve airborne brigade expansion in the nation. Two National Guard platoons based in Baytown and Houston units will become airborne qualified by mid-1970 as part of a nationwide reorganization expanding the 4 500 man 1st Infantry Brigade (Airborne) headquartered in Houston. The reorganization replaces the 5th Infantry, shifts units across south Texas, and ends the era of half strength units to form full strength organizations. Lt. Col. Jesse Garrett notes modern wars require smaller, flexible units and training will improve with airborne qualification via Ft. Benning. Approximately 1,000 soldiers from the region will train each summer based on current orders.
