Virginia Poll Tax Test Before High Court
The U S government asks the Supreme Court to outlaw state and local poll taxes as a voting qualification. Five Virginia Negroes seek to strike down the tax as discriminatory against the poor. The case raises whether any voting tax is constitutional, challenging a 1997 ruling on the poll tax. Virginia’s tax is 1.10 per year.
