Carver Tops Mann Twice In Local School Games
George Washington Carver Junior School beat Horace Mann twice to lead the 7th and 8th grade standings in the first round. In 7th grade Carver won 30 to 4 and 7 to 4. In 8th grade Carver trailed at halftime but outscored Mann 16-5 in the fourth quarter and edged into overtime before taking the OT 5 to 4. Robert Ealey led Carver with 21 points, Terry Lawrence and Pluck Harmon added 11 each. Ja cob Helowman led Mann with 16, followed by Mike Burgess 11 and Marty Kollmeyer 10. Lionel Nestin led Carver in the 7th grade with 16.

Houston baseball figure Mizell will represent Boston’s Jim Lenborg at the eighth annual Houston Major League Baseball Dinner next Tuesday at the Shamrock Hilton. Lenborg, winner of the Dickie Kerr Award for outstanding pitcher, is recovering from knee surgery after a December ski accident and cannot attend. Mizell starred for the 1951 Houston Buffs, played eight MLB seasons with the Cardinals Pirates and Mets, with his high point a 14 8 season in 1960 helping the Pirates to the NL pennant.
