Humble Baytown Refinery 1948 A Year Of Expansion And Service

The Baytown refinery of Humble Oil and Refining Co. marked 1948 with major facility construction including the air conditioned Central Mechanical Shop and Pipe Still No. 4. The MEK Dewaxing Unit doubled premium motor oil production, docks were expanded for 26 000 ton tankers, and conservation efforts invested about 42 million dollars. San Jacinto Memorial Hospital opened with a 1.8 million gift, initial 100 beds later growing to 350. Battleship Texas passed the docks in April, and Jerry Wayne Bashrum became the first baby born there. Quarterback Tomi Swede Stoshandskie of Robert E. Lee later earned all American honors.
