Ordinary Controls Don't Affect State Of Economy
President Nixon’s cautious reaction to Bethlehem Steel price hikes reflects a view that the current economy’s special obligations and expectations limit traditional fiscal and monetary tools. Inflation psychology remains strong amid union demands, high unemployment, and persistent price increases, prompting calls for an incomes policy and tighter guidance on wage gains. Nixon has embraced Keynesian ideas, accepting larger deficits to balance modern social demands, making economic equilibrium far more challenging than in the past.
