In Helsinki on January 18, Soha Paasikivi is reelected Finland’s president with a large margin, defeating the Communist candidate. He secures at least 300 electoral votes out of 107, as his bloc gains the presidency amid Soviet war-crime extradition pressure. The campaign tightens as rightist and liberal factions endorse Paasikivi.

BEAUMONT, Jan. 18. Port Arthur planned to appeal a court ruling allowing Carnation Milk Company of Houston to distribute products in Port Arthur. District Judge Nichols found two Port Arthur ordinances conflicting with state and federal milk standards. Carnation began selling here in 1949 and obtained a temporary injunction in April 1949 restraining city interference. The 58th district court action was brought by Carnation to clarify its sales operations in Port Arthur.
San Jacinto Memorial Hospital trustees met County Commissioner Hugh May and Auditor Harry Washburn to seek to handle all emergency cases from the area that are now sent to Jeff Davis Hospital in Houston. Hospital secretary treasurer Matherne said the hospital could serve local charity cases if compensated, noting last year’s county costs around 275000 dollars. Kilgore and other trustees stressed a desire to avoid transfers for charity patients while acknowledging the hospital’s two loss years and need for support.

Emil Voytek of Highlands, a fisher, nearly drowned when his boat drifted into the swift current of the flooded San Jacinto River. He and his 19 year old son Albert had set a trapline and slept. Voytek, blinded by the boat light, lost bearings as the boat swung into the river. Albert and Douglas Holec searched Highlands for his father.

In Mabano y City Pa on January 18 the body of Edward Burda a year old miner was located at the bottom of a 2115 foot deep anthracite mine. State Mine Inspector John Morgan said the body had not yet been recovered and that an avalanche of coal and debris caused the cave-in last Friday. Rescue workers faced hours more before removal.

Boston authorities and federal agents launched a nationwide manhunt for nine gunmen who robbed Brink's Inc. of 1.5 million dollars in cash and checks from a Boston area vault. A black Cadillac used in the job was traced to New York, while a 25-year-old Suspect linked to a Somerville laundry robbery was held on bail. The heist prompted air and road block measures, with hundreds of troopers deployed and Brink's employees questioned as investigators tally the loot.
Lee College will begin its second semester with a new business administration course called office practice or applied secretarial training.
