City approves 12 major drainage projects for 1977

Baytown City Council backs a prioritized list: 12 major drainage projects and 33 minor ones for the year. Public Works recommends the plan, and the three city drainage crews will carry out the work.

The Exxon Annuitants Association will meet at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the Community Building. Exxon representatives will explain survivor benefit plans hospitalization and contributory life insurance. Also note Baytown Mothers Association for Childbirth Education breast feeding groups will not meet Monday.

Sterling Boosters Meet and Local Projects Start Dates

The Sterling Booster Club meets at 7 p.m. Monday in the Sterling cafeteria to honor the varsity basketball team and discuss fund raising. A defensive driving class begins at 7 p.m. Monday at Lee College. Senior Citizens plan a 6 p.m. Tuesday January dinner at Baytown Community Building. Project area start dates stretch April 1 through November 15 across Mabry Road to Cedar Bayou Road with various streets and outfall ditch work.

Gilmore Executed by Utah Firing Squad After Stay Lifted

Gary Mark Gilmore, the 36 year old killer who demanded death and twice attempted suicide in prison, was executed by firing squad minutes after a federal appeals court lifted a stay. He died at 9 06 a m in Utah State Prison after being moved to the execution site dressed in white and wearing an overcoat. His uncle called it dying with dignity while his lawyers described a night of final moments and gratitude.

Mobile homes rise in Chambers County housing mix

Water Bond Sale Set For February By Baytown Authority

Baytown Area Water Authority plans its first revenue bond sale to fund a $13.6 million surface water treatment system with preliminary plans due by spring and detailed designs by September. Sorensen Reveals Carter Asked CIA Nomination Be Withdrawn

Theodore C. Sorensen told the Senate Intelligence Committee he asked President-elect Jimmy Carter to pull his CIA director nomination. He did not reveal Carter’s reply, but chairman Daniel Inouye indicated the committee would allow Sorensen to step aside. Navy launch capsizes in Barcelona harbor killing nine

A U S Navy launch with 110 sailors and marines aboard capsized in Barcelona harbor early today. Nine Americans were killed, five missing, and 19 injured. The U S Consulate reported the disaster amid other violence tolls across the country and a city bus strike vote in Houston.

Baytown Hits Record Low After Cold Night

Baytown endured a freezing Sunday as temperatures plunged to 22 degrees, shattering the 1965 record of 23. The National Weather Service warned of more subfreezing conditions for Baytown and Houston area into Monday night with no rain in sight. The forecast calls for a high in the upper 40s by midweek. Across Texas, freezing weather was common except in the far south, per AP.
